About Our Chef

MacKenzie Smith - Black Dolphin Inn Executive Chef

MacKenzie is an ex-Brooklynite currently living in Florida with a master's degree from Columbia University. She is the creator of and functions as the Executive Chef at the Black Dolphin Inn. As the sandwich expert for and a social media marketing manager for multiple foodie companies, she works in many aspects of the food industry. MacKenzie's experience includes food style and photography, social media content creation, recipe development and writing, catering, branding and media consultation.

MacKenzie's work has appeared on Martha Stewart, Real Simple Magazine, Buzzfeed, Thrillist, Eater, Huffington Post, Style Me Pretty, Refinery 29, The FeedFeed, Spoon University and more. MacKenzie was also recently named one of Refinery 29's "Top 10 NYC Food Instragrams" to follow and was one of Thrillist's 24 "NYC Instragrams You Need To Follow Right Now." MacKenzie is a Food Network Facebook Live Host, the sandwich expert for The Spruce Eats, and has worked as a spokesperson and culinary influencer for many national food brands. She has also won first place on two shows on the Food Network – The Cheesier Episode of Guy’s Grocery Games and the All Star Bigger Better Burger Battle of Guy’s Grocery Games.

MacKenzie has also done live cooking demos on The Couch (CBS), at the International Association of Culinary Professions, The Basque Culinary Center, and Blue Moon's 20 Year Anniversary Party in Orlando, FL. She's done grilled cheese pop-ups in New York, California, Wisconsin, Florida, Spain and Germany.

MacKenzie was formerly an editorial assistant for Saveur Magazine, the website director and cheesemonger for Depanneur Brooklyn, and has also managed social media clients such as SW Basics, AHeirloom, Depanneur Brooklyn, Brooklyn Slate and Simple Squares.

A 2018 top ten finalist in's "Best B&B Breakfast Tournament," The Black Dolphin Inn takes the term "bed and breakfast" to a new level. Breakfast is served from 8:00-10:00 each morning, prepared from scratch in our professional "open air" exhibition kitchen, which is seamlessly integrated into our Lobby, where the "food is the theater and cooking is the action and the drama."

Our Signature Breakfast, which is served Monday through Friday, includes fresh fruit, an assortment of 3 fresh fruit juices daily, yogurt, granola, cereals, homemade jellies and preserves, and assorted breads, along with a cooked-to-order hot item each morning.

On the weekend, the Black Dolphin Inn's acclaimed Full Southern Breakfast features a locally-sourced diverse menu of 3 sweet and savory entree choices, including such selections as our famous breakfast grilled cheese, unique 'mini skillet' creations, and delectable omelettes just to name a few. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and a variety of fresh squeezed juices and beverages are available during the breakfast service.

Guests can seat themselves in a number of indoor and outdoor venues including our kitchen bar area, community table, and our outdoor decks, porches and terraces, where it is not uncommon to see dolphins frolicking in the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Please let us know about any of your special dietary requirements when you make your reservation, as we welcome the opportunity to accommodate your special needs.

Our decadent breakfast is available exclusively to registered guests of the Black Dolphin Inn, and by their invitation only to outside visitors. Those who wish to join our guests for breakfast are welcome to do so, subject to seating availability.

In the afternoon, our Lobby Beverage Refreshment bar offers complimentary tea service, coffee, fruit-infused water and assorted beverages, along with special treats and snacks. A self-service Keurig coffee and tea station is available in the Lobby area 24/7 for your convenience.

As night falls, our guests can enjoy a cold draft beer on tap, glass of wine, or a bottle of Champagne at our Lobby Lounge Bar. Or gather under a blanket of stars from our 2nd floor Dolphin Deck, where you can observe a flotilla of sailboats silhouetted against the New Smyrna Beach city skyline.

The food scene in New Smyrna Beach is a rich crossroads of local cuisines which are ethnically diverse, locally sourced, and creatively prepared. Your appetite will awaken with every new dawn and we have culinary comforts and adventures waiting for you.

New Smyrna Beach enjoys an abundance of seafood unrivaled on the East Coast of Florida. From fresh caught Mahi-Mahi, along the 27 fathom line, to American red snapper or grouper caught on local artificial and natural reefs, your choices are endless. You will also find stone crab claws harvested in local waters and farm raised clams from Cedar Creek. Oak Hill, to our south offers fresh briny oysters as well as fresh flounder, hand-gigged during the dark of night. Our local estuaries offer commercially trapped blue crab and shrimp hand-netted in the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. As you can see, we enjoy an incredible fishery of local native seafood.

From here, our local creative chefs make it happen with signature dishes such as a Crunchy Grouper Sandwich with a Key Lime Mango Sauce and Whole Fried Red Snapper with Saffron Rice and Cucumber Jalapeno Relish. If you are in the mood for oysters on the half shell, steamed shrimp or flounder stuffed with blue crab meat, you're in luck. Local home grown clams served with linguine in a white wine sauce. All of which are treated with an eye for creativity and presentation so the flavors of Florida shine through.
